What’s a Butkus?
Diving game is the most basic game in the game. Goal: Get a yard. The quarterback catches the ball, turns around, and passes the ball to the cornerback — the cornerback rushes to the line of scrimmage and heads up. The goal is to gain a yard or two. It’s not pretty and rarely creates big drama, but it builds confidence by creating a clear goal and achieving it. In short, how on earth can you expect to score a touchdown if you don’t have the drive and determination to go the extra yard?
Looking for something Suppose you are looking for it! Finding your Butkus, at its core, means finding what you already have. It is already a part of you, perhaps hidden deep within your psyche, or more likely, just hidden in an ordinary place. Right under your nose – in your heart.
In Kevin Costner’s film “A Field if Dreams,” his character Ray Kinsella hears a voice in a cornfield, “If you build it, he will come.” He was asked to believe the whisper and hear the feeling. That voice told him to listen and then act—all by faith.
While tall corn may not be calling you, I’m sure you’ve had a brainstorm while you’re in the shower or driving. A gut feeling that says to act.
Your Butkus, I said with a wink, by walking around and finding your rear end, which is slightly to the south. I might add with both hands! Maybe the reason you haven’t found Butkus yet is because you’re sitting on it!
So what is Bukus?
No, it’s not But-Kis, it’s pronounced But-Kus. You say it on purpose and always with attitude. If you’re a sports fan, you’ve probably heard the name Dick Butkus. In fact, most people in North America have heard of this name, even though they may not know who or what it is.
Yes, it’s an odd name.
But there’s nothing funny about the image or iconic status the name connotes. Like a four year old, when I first heard the name and saw Dick Butkus’ NFL profile, I was intrigued. Actually, it’s more like “awe”.
NFL Films statement; “Dick Butkus played football with a religious fervor, with an unrelenting obsession, not for excellence, but for domination and demoralization. For Dick Butkus, it was never Not one game, but a street fight, an all-out place, no paint. Butkus is the most destructive defender in the game, and the NFL is full of stories of people who played against him. He was a difficult The power to control; he was the white whale in the goldfish bowl. His career was the most enduring piece of sabotage ever made on a football pitch by anyone, anywhere, at any time.”
Dick Butkus is considered the toughest man in the history of professional football. Anyway, one; won’t quit. He never won a championship or a Super Bowl; damn, his team was so bad they didn’t even make the playoffs. However, that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the best NFL football players of all time.
Myself, as a 12-year-old football player, I wanted to be Dick Butkus. Everything from the clumsy stride of his pigeon toes, to the color of his uniform is intimidating. It all captured my imagination. His linebacker stance, crouching like a mountain lion ready to pounce, is intimidating enough. But when he’s focused on moving, he indulges recklessly. He is different from other players on the field.
Butkus, for me, became a metaphor for the movement and a symbol of effort and achievement. No matter what the odds are, you won’t give up. If I call my Butkus, I know what to do and when to do it.
Now that I’ve pictured Butkus and how important he is, I must tell you that I didn’t get it right away. In fact, it took me over thirty years to understand. I had to dig deep into my memory for things I thought I already knew.
This is where the problem lies! “If you don’t have it, you don’t know how to use it” is a topic for later, but it’s safe to say for now; just knowing something doesn’t make it worthwhile.
Knowledgeable people are often overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated not only by others, but – mostly themselves. The great artist Michelangelo (not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) said, “The greater danger for most of us is not that we aim too high and miss it; Too low to miss the mark!”
Are you hitting the low end of what you’re asking for? Looking for success in all the wrong places? Have you been taught, like me, that opportunities take years of pain to materialize. Are they out of your control? Have you been told to learn more, create skills you don’t have and go where someone else has set you? And then, when you arrive, tell you again, it’s going to be hard, life is hard in fact. You need to be strong and learn to live with what you don’t want, – to get what you want! nonsense.
I said, what do you want – want you, what you are looking for is to find you. What you want is not just to exist, but rather, it already exists inside of you. It’s not hard, but yes, it’s intense and does require your full attention! You’ve heard, I’m sure, the natural laws of the universe? I don’t think the “Law of Attraction” exists as an external magnet to get you what you want, but rather that it synchronizes your desires and brings you more of what you already have.
In the movie The Lion King, Mufasa calls out to his son Simba from heaven with the command “Remember who you are!” Your job is to find, maybe just remember “what” you already have. To you will lead you to your Butkus.
Hit that; remember who you are! Find your own words, find your ? ? ? in life!
Just like the basic diving game, set a goal that you can rely on – one that builds confidence. Keep it simple and warm like a puppy. Guaranteed to get the yard when you need it. Just the act of feeling good can put you in the right frame of mind to start paying attention to the important things.
It’s not about finding out what works in life, no, it’s about finding your happiness. Believe me, if my dream was a guy named Dick Butkus, could you want something crazier? Open the doors of your desires, listen to the realm of your dreams, and let all the people, places and things you desire come to you.
