How to Appreciate Your Strengths

Every person in this world is unique and different from others in his/her own way. We each have unique talents, and our strengths and weaknesses vary. Think of all the different athletes competing in the Olympics or otherwise; each athlete is good at his/her sport and knows how to be the best in that particular field. A sprinter will know exactly when to increase his running speed, a shot putter will know how hard to hit the ball, a gymnast will know which technique to use to keep his balance in the air, and so on.

All of these are experts in their fields; if they change the sport, you can’t expect them to be the best at what they do. If they were to change the sport, their strengths would be redundant; they would try to perform in areas where they might be weak.

In the business world, when employees perform well, managers tend to criticize the work rather than encourage or praise employees. Your boss will usually focus on areas where you need to improve, and you will remember negative comments more than positive and encouraging ones.

Criticism is the most memorable, causing you to work on your weaknesses while ignoring your strengths.

The importance of strengths

Managers will highlight areas where employees need to improve. If the strengths of employees are ignored, performance will not improve.

The reason is:

If managers keep focusing on employees’ weaknesses, they won’t be encouraged to work on them, because negative feedback often makes people defensive. A person will naturally feel that observations of his/her work are inauthentic, and may feel that that particular aspect of the work is irrelevant anyway. They will not be motivated to improve in this area.

We tend to respond well to compliments; when we realize that something we’re doing is appreciated, we try to repeat the same thing again, hoping for more compliments.

Second, it has been argued that human strengths and weaknesses are somewhat fixed. Therefore, you should be clear about what your strengths are. Traditional assessment methods won’t help identify strengths, so you need to find a way to identify strengths and work on them.

Here is an overview of some of the steps used in the Reflect Your Best Self technique:

Ask others about your strengths

First, gather about ten or more people who are able to give you unbiased and accurate feedback about your strengths. This may include colleagues, former colleagues, friends and family.

Ask them to think about what your strengths are and give examples of strengths they identify. These can be any type of strength and don’t have to be job-related.

If you’re unhappy with your current job, it’s important to get feedback from people who know you outside of your work environment. They can identify real strengths that you fail to demonstrate at work.

Make sure participants in this exercise understand that you are seeking to identify and understand your strengths, rather than simply seeking compliments.

At work, you can do this exercise with co-workers or ask them to do it themselves if they choose.

However, if you’re too shy to invite others into this exercise, you can identify ten close people you’ve known for a long time and write down what you think they think are your strengths.
