BJJ Training Tips – How to Choose A Rolling Partner in BJJ

Time to roll, the mat is packed. Improve your arsenal with these BJJ training tips!

Yep, there’s a fun list of about 100 different rolling partners you might pair up with in a BJJ class. This is not that list. The following post will give you some BJJ training tips that you can implement quickly. It will also help explain the different types of people you’ll meet, and which ones you should choose based on your goals.

Iron grinds iron

I think before we talk about people types, we should first talk about identifying and achieving your goals. We’ve all heard the phrase “iron grinds iron.” correct? what does that mean? I used to cheat. Wrestling all the time. Mainly because I don’t know any better. I thought I was using this system. But it turns out I was just working on myself. This is the main difference between being a champion or not. Or reach your goal. or not.

To determine if you’re made of champion material, ask yourself this question – how do you work out when no one is watching you?

Now back to how I cheated. I am not cheating to gain an advantage, nor am I cheating to win. I deluded myself into thinking I “won” by taking it easy in practice. When it comes time to choose a partner, I usually choose someone who doesn’t have that much of a challenge. I don’t want to work very hard.

In the end, who was hurt? I. Can iron grind iron? Well, I opted for soft aluminum to sharpen my “irons”, which didn’t have any positive effects.

I don’t hone any skills with materials that aren’t as sharp as I am.

It’s funny because I’m pretty hypocritical on this one. I’m sure you’ve seen this happen. You’re doing extra high-intensity training or training at the gym. Unfortunately, sometimes at my gym, they make us kill ourselves or shuttle on the mat. If you don’t win the heat, you’ll get extra push-ups and another run. How many times have you seen, out of the corner of your eye, someone not doing all the push-ups they were assigned? Does it bother you? Why?

It shouldn’t bother us, but it does bother me, and it used to annoy me more. I would wonder how they cheated. Here, I’m doing every rep to the best of my abilities, and the clown is taking it easy. Two things: First, who are they fooling? Only themselves. If they don’t want to get stronger, that’s their responsibility. Second, then I would turn right and choose an easy partner. That’s what I mean when I say I’m hypocritical. So, iron grinds iron. You’re not going to get better training with people who are much worse than you. You just won’t.

BJJ Training Tips – Setting Your BJJ Goals

Before you choose a rolling partner (note I wrote rolling and not drilling), it’s important to determine what your goals are.

In order to choose a BJJ rolling partner, I thought it might be helpful to set weekly and monthly goals. This way you can track your progress after a week or so, rather than simply trying for a day, seeing no results, and giving up.

So set a goal. Assuming you’re a blue belt, one of your goals might be that when you’re up against a black belt coach, you want to keep him from getting past your defense, and if he does, you want to regroup as soon as possible. Remember that your goals can, will and should change depending on the type of partner you choose. Here’s how they break down.

These are really 3 types of people that you may seek to deal with or have a relationship with, all of which have strengths and weaknesses depending on your goals.

1) This guy is much better than you— These are people well above your skill level, like your lecturers, etc. They pretty much own you the entire time you’re rolling.

shortcoming – You may become discouraged because you feel like you are not getting better and nothing is working!

advantage – You are getting better and better! Your survival game will improve. Linebacker retention and reshuffling should improve, as should your commit defense and base positioning.

Remember – iron grinds iron!

2) Guys who are not as skilled as you – These are people below your skill level, like white belts or new blue belts. You have them pretty much the entire time you roll.

shortcoming – You can develop bad habits because most things are not good for someone at this skill level. You did not take the test during the exam.

advantage – You can experiment, tweak and fine-tune your game since you basically have a guinea pig in your guard to play with. These are the best training buddies when you really want to work hard or perfect a technique without getting knocked over. Once you get it working at this level, take it up a notch.

3) The person you are with – These could be 3-5 people in your school who can make you money and vice versa. You exchange positions or submit opinions, and whoever “wins” that night probably won’t win tomorrow. Almost a toss.

shortcoming – Nothing I can think of.

advantage – Rolling with this cat lets you know where your game is. This will let you know if the things you’ve been experimenting with on lower level people are applicable at this level. If not, you’ll need to do more practice and adjustments before you try moving on a higher belt.

Now that we’ve looked at the 3 types of partners, can you see how your goals will change depending on your opponent?

BJJ Training Tips – Examples of BJJ Goals

I’ll start by making some assumptions so that my examples are standard.

1) You are still a Cordon Bleu.

2) You have 2 black belts, 3 brown belts, 5 purple belts, 15 blue belts and 25 white belts.

3) You know their approximate skill level.

One of your goals may be to get better at flower sweeping. You’ve never been able to hit this sweep.

If we look at the 3 options for BJJ rolling partners, let’s make a choice. Since we’ve been unable to hit sweeps, we probably won’t hit dudes any better than our black belts. At our skill level, we probably don’t deal with these guys very often. Therefore, we are left with only those below us.

Pick someone who is below your skill level and only do 2 rolls a night for a week. Choose from two white belts or the new blue belt and focus on guarding and setting sweeps. Perfect your technique. Make them sweep over you in a certain way when you hit it so you can use it again during the roll.

After a week, take your technique to the next level. See if it works for someone at or close to your skill level.

Do not? Back to the drawing board. Yes? Excellent! Try it out at a higher skill level.

I’ve seriously improved my triangle success rate with this method. I used to think triangles weren’t for me. But I’ve been playing with them who I can hit it relatively easily. I mean, how do you know what adjustments to make if you don’t even have a lock on your black belt? So I’ve been studying them against whites and blues and I’ve seen what mistakes I’ve made and what’s working and what’s not.

If your technique doesn’t work with new vaginal discharge, you should probably come up with a new technique, right?

Another example of setting goals and using this method might be improving your submission defenses. Who better to try than someone who already has you?

Set a goal to play a round against someone much better than you every night for a week. Once you get that down, keep that goal and add, no back pass. So now you’re trying to master commit defense and keep vigilant about someone more senior than you.

Now see how iron sharpens iron?
