A New Season in Gaming
A recent study in the US revealed that only 30% of the 31.4 million gamers are women. As a full-time anchor on Twitch, Rhode Island in Autumn Made a name for himself in the male-dominated gaming world. The Toronto-based streamer, who started gaming with her dad at a young age, spoke about her experience working in an industry that wasn’t always open to women.
1. How did you get introduced to esports?
Because of my dad and my brother, I started playing video games at a very young age and I haven’t been able to stop since then. When I was introduced to the world of esports, I was amazed at how it worked. As a very competitive person, when I discovered Twitch.tv and all the amazing possibilities in front of me, I decided it was time to take my love for gaming to the next level.
2. What exactly do you do in the field of e-sports?
I’m a full-time streamer on Twitch. I play CS:GO, CoD, LoL etc. I spend hours every day playing these games, always practicing, always trying to be my best. I’ve played a lot of games and I’ve always had a good time.
3. How do you see women in esports, especially in your region?
I think women in esports in my area (Toronto) are doing a good name for all of us. They know how difficult it is to be women in this industry, and they work hard to maintain their image as not only a serious competitor, but a woman who can play as well as any man. Because of Toronto’s large population, competition in the esports world is fierce.
4. What experiences have you had in a field that has always been dominated by men?
Some of my experiences in this field haven’t always been great, but other times they’ve been great. I remember going to the Cineplex World Gaming CoD Championship last year, and when I walked into the theater, people were shocked as to why I was there. The male I faced was very scared because he had never played a girl before and he didn’t know what to expect; it made him nervous. At the same time, some of the other men in the game thought that because I was female, I was easy to beat, because I couldn’t possibly be good at any game. In an industry where we’re told “we can’t play video games because we’re women”, that’s really disappointing in today’s society. There are so many men who hate women in the gaming industry, I don’t know if it’s because society teaches people that only boys can play video games, or if some of them are too ignorant to realize that our gender has nothing to do with our ability to be good at something irrelevant.
5. What is your favorite thing about being part of the esports community?
One of my favorite things about being part of the esports community is how well we know each other. It’s been great going to races and events and having a lot in common with everyone. We can all relate in one way or another.
6. What is the most difficult thing about doing e-sports?
The hardest part of being a woman in esports is how so many men see us. It’s annoying that they rarely take us seriously because we’ve worked as hard or harder as them to get where we are in the game industry.
7. Why do you think women’s participation in esports is so important?
I think it’s really important to get more women in esports because we need to break down the stereotype of a men-only world. Many women avoid the gaming industry because many are harassed and bullied for showing interest in games. It’s great to see people finally starting to shed light on this topic and speaking up.
8. What are your hopes for women in esports?
My hope for women in esports is that one day men won’t judge us for being part of the gaming community and realize that we can play games as well as they do, if not better. I can see that more and more people are starting to open up to women in gaming over the past few years, which is a relief because it’s a relief for women like me who put a lot of time and energy into competitive gaming Saying it’s unfair is just being turned off by society saying we can’t be good at the game.
