What Sumo Wrestlers Can Teach You About Weight Loss
There is only one sport where athletes try to put on weight and gain as much body fat as possible: sumo. Size is a distinct advantage for sumo wrestlers, so they actually do everything they can to gain weight.
We thought it would be interesting to see some of the things sumo wrestlers do to gain weight so you can see how doing the opposite can help you lose fat.
1. Skip breakfast. Depriving their bodies of food after an 8-hour fast during sleep made their metabolisms run at half the speed as if they were still sleeping, so they burned fewer calories during the day.
What you can learn from it: If you want to lose weight, eat breakfast as soon as you wake up. Eating “wakes up” your metabolism and powers your body’s fat-burning engine.
2. Exercise on an empty stomach. With no food for fuel, sumo wrestlers keep their metabolic rates low, so they burn fewer calories while exercising. Engaging in any type of exercise quickly depletes the available sugar in the blood (the body’s source of energy). When your blood sugar levels drop, your body thinks you’re starving and tries to conserve fat by shutting down your metabolism.
What you can learn from it: Eating before and after resistance training is important if you’re trying to lose weight. Always eat a meal or a good snack 30 to 60 minutes before a workout, then eat again within an hour of your workout to avoid blood sugar dips.
3. Eat only a few meals a day. A famous sumo wrestler reportedly devoured 10 bowls of stew, 8 bowls of rice, 130 pieces of sushi and 25 servings of grilled beef in one meal…with room for dessert. Since their bodies can only process so much food at one time, the rest is stored as fat.
What you can learn from it: When you cram all your calories into a few big meals, you gain weight. If you’re trying to lose weight, a smarter approach is to spread out your calories throughout the day by eating three or four meals with snacks in between. This prevents dips and spikes in blood sugar, keeps your metabolism racing, and prevents you from getting so hungry that you overeat.
4. Take a nap or sleep after meals. Sumo wrestlers always lie down for a nap or take a long sleep after a “big meal” of the day. This is because when a sumo wrestler’s body is in sleep mode, all functions, including his metabolism, slow down. So all the food in his stomach turned to fat.
What you can learn from it: If you’re trying to lose weight, wait at least an hour after eating before going to sleep.
5. Excessive drinking. To gain weight, some sumo wrestlers drink beer by the case, often consuming 50 or more bottles at a time. This causes their adrenal glands to dump a hormone called cortisol into their bloodstream. Cortisol can slow down metabolism and increase fat storage.
What you can learn from it: If you’re trying to lose weight, keep your alcohol intake in check. When you start to feel the “buzz,” you’ve had enough.
