Female Bodybuilding – A Condensed History of the Sport
At the beginning
As you can guess, bodybuilding started with men. Competitive male bodybuilding began at the end of the 19th century. The most prestigious male competition today is the Mr. Olympia.
Here come the “girls”
Women’s bodybuilding came onto the scene noticeably in the late 1970s. The first official women’s competition in the USA was the 1978 Women’s National Physics Championship. The most prestigious title for women today is Ms. Olympia, which started in 1980 as Miss Olympia. Competition Ms. Olympia is currently the biggest competition for professional female bodybuilders.
The National Physique Committee sponsors the highest amateur level competition for women in the US Interestingly, competitors in this competition are required to “maintain a feminine appearance. Extreme hardness and extreme muscle size are not acceptable.” Besides these two competitions, there are many other organizations and competitions for female bodybuilders around the world.
Usual exposure and acceptance
In the 1980s, women’s bodybuilding began to gain a lot of popularity due to some “scandals”. Several female bodybuilders posed for Playboy magazine. Because of this, they were suspended from the competition for one year. The movie “Pumping Iron II: The Women” and some small television shows about women’s competitions – usually months after the actual competition and used only as TV filler – provided additional coverage. Competition Ms. The 1991 Olympia was the first women’s bodybuilding title to be televised live.
More controversy and some double standards
Since the beginning of recognized women’s bodybuilding competitions, there has been a level of controversy and/or conflict in the rules and juries of the governing bodybuilding organizations.
Mostly, the conflict is about how “feminine” female bodybuilders should be while still being very muscular. For example, in 2000, new guidelines introduced by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) stated that women would be judged on “healthy appearance, face, make-up and skin tone”. The IFBB also said women will be judged on “symmetry, presentation, separation and muscularity BUT NOT TO THE EXTREME!” (The capital and exclamation point were in the original guidelines.)
In 2004, the IFBB introduced the “20% Percent Rule,” requiring “female athletes in bodybuilding, fitness, and figure to reduce the amount of muscularity by a factor of 20%.” These kinds of double standards and ever-changing rules can be confusing!
The sport continues to grow
Despite the difficulty of double standards and the fact that the sport requires extreme discipline and dedication, women’s bodybuilding continues to grow in popularity as more women are attracted to the weightlifting and athleticism of the sport.
