Some Truths and Misconceptions About Internet Marketing

The best way to start earning for yourself is E-COMMERCE. Why not? If you have a computer and access to the Internet (which millions of people access every day), you have the initial tools to start making money online. Once you create (or discover) a product or service that you can market, you’re on your way to financial freedom. Welcome to the world of INTERNET MARKETING.
For those familiar with internet marketing, you may find opportunities that tell you that you can “make money overnight” or tell you how easy it is to start making $10,000 a month. Also, some of these opportunities will tell you that it is “free” to start making money online. I want to discuss some of the misconceptions you may hear about Internet marketing and the truths about each of these misconceptions. Before I get into these misconceptions, I will illustrate an example of a misconception that I faced years ago when I was looking for a business opportunity.
The year was 1987, and I was a sophomore at Howard University in Washington, DC. At that time, my mother paid part of my school fees. I got the rest from financial aid. I know my mother had a hard time paying for my college education, so I wanted to find a way to help her with those expenses. After all, I wanted to be responsible for my college education.
I can’t remember where I saw the opportunity, but it was an ad that said FOR THE ENVELOPE STUFFING. Of course, at that time the Internet was not available to the general public, so I had to send information through the mail. About a week later, I received a letter in the mail. I started reading the letter, getting excited about the prospect of making good money. I remembered some things that were mentioned in the letter:
First it was mentioned how easy it is to make money stuffing envelopes and get paid for it. Second, one would ask: HOW MANY ENVELOPES CAN YOU FILL PER MONTH? 10? 50? 100? 300? As I read this, my excitement grew. “YES, I can fit 300 envelopes or more.”
The next thing the letter focuses on is the amount of money you can earn. I don’t remember the exact amount, but it was somewhere between $2,000 and $5,000 a month.
The bottom line is… a letter focused on how much you can earn that would get anyone excited about applying. At the end of the letter was a price of about $24.95, which you would have to pay to start stuffing envelopes. I paid the fee and then submitted the order form. I thought to myself…not only will I be able to pay my college expenses, but I will also be able to do my Christmas shopping during the holiday season.
When I received the report and read it, my excitement suddenly turned to disappointment. After reading this report, I found out that I had to put out ads to entice others who wanted to stuff envelopes, and then I would have to send those interested the same letter I got before, hence the term “Envelope Stuffing”. The report suggested placing an ad in the National Inquirer. When I bought the National Inquirer, you wouldn’t believe how many ENVELOPE FILLER ads I saw. There were HUNDREDS of ads. UGGHHH!!!!!
The envelope stuffing scheme was an example of a chain letter scam. Such a tactic would be illegal in this day and age, but there were plenty of these business scams back then. Deception is the name of the game with these opportunities. You convince the person reading your letter how much money they can make without discussing the details, put a price on it, and after the prospect pays, you reveal the truth about what’s being offered. Unfortunately, many business opportunities today use the same tactics. Many of them tell you what you want to hear about making a lot of money and tell you how easy it is to make that money. Once you pay the fee or opt-in to receive the email, you will learn the truth about the opportunity. In my opinion, this deception is one of the reasons why many people who want to become internet marketers fail before they even start. When a self-starter comes across a business opportunity that is misleading, says one thing, then after you pay or make up your mind, say something else, it can be discouraging to say the least.
Below I have listed 6 misconceptions about internet marketing and then the truths behind these misconceptions.
MYTH #1: YOU CAN MAKE MONEY OVERNIGHT
Misconception: This is probably the number one misconception one hears about Internet marketing. Believe it or not, there are business opportunities that claim you can make money “overnight”. When they say this, they don’t mean you can literally make money overnight, but you can make it fast.
Truth: There are several ways you can make money overnight: 1) winning the lottery, 2) winning big at the casinos, 3) winning by betting on sports, and 4) receiving money from an inheritance. As for making money overnight in internet marketing; that is, if you start from scratch, it just doesn’t happen. No one goes from rags to riches overnight with internet marketing. The truth is that making money as an internet marketer is a slow and methodical process. Even our top internet marketers will tell you that it took months and maybe years before they even made any serious money.
MYTH #2: YOU CANNOT MAKE MONEY ONLINE
Myth: Before the Internet became available to the public, there were many pyramid schemes and business practices that would be illegal today. Likewise, many people believe that most online business opportunities are not legitimate, so making money online is nothing more than a fantasy.
Truth: There are legitimate online business opportunities that can provide you with a good income. As with any business venture, online or otherwise, there are procedures you must follow if you want to be successful. In other words, you need to treat your online business like any mom-and-pop store; you’ll have to build it, which means you’ll have to work! Over time (and with a little investment), you can generate a significant online income for yourself.
MISTAKE #3: FREE… FREE… EVERYTHING IS FREE!!!!
Misconception: When it comes to internet marketing, the only word you will see in most business opportunities is the word FREE. Some of these opportunities will claim to help you make money online, for free.
Truth: You won’t be able to make $10,000 a month with an opportunity you got for absolutely free. Many of these business opportunities will tell you that you can make a significant income out of pocket, but only after you “opt in” (meaning you’ve signed up to receive future emails from them) then you’ll receive emails in which they will “sell” to get you to pay an offer to make money with the opportunity. The fact is, no business opportunity will make money by giving you something 100% free. Think about it. If you could make $10K a month without spending a dime of your own money, then there would be more successful Internet marketers in business.
MYTH #4: “YOU CAN EARN $1000 IN JUST 7 DAYS”
Misconception: You’ve probably seen opportunities that claim you can make a certain amount of money in a certain amount of time. Personally, I’ve seen videos where people claim to have made over $1000 in one week after opening an opportunity.
Truth: It may be possible for an experienced internet marketer who has already built a business relationship with a large number of people (ie a large list of email subscribers) to start a new business opportunity and make at least a thousand dollars a week. It might be possible to make that much money if you pay a lot of $$$ for advertising. In general, no one, and I mean NO ONE, who is inexperienced in internet marketing will be able to generate that much money in the first 7 days of promoting their business. The fact is that many of these business opportunities usually exaggerate the earnings to convince you to sign up. Any legitimate business should tell you more about the opportunity itself and less about the money you can make.
MYTH #5: “IT’S SO SIMPLE, EVEN A TEN-YEAR-OLD CAN DO IT”
Misconception: When a business opportunity says a 10-year-old can do the job, it’s telling you that you don’t have to put in much effort to make money.
Truth: If this statement were true, there would be many more Internet marketers making money online. If the business opportunity was that simple, you wouldn’t have to go to college for 4 years to work for your degree. All you have to do is promote this business to earn money. The truth is that no business opportunity is “easy”. You’ll still need to put in a lot of time and effort (and/or money) to get it to grow and start making money.
MISTAKE #6: “YOUR WEBSITE WILL BE SEEN BY THOUSANDS”
Misconception: There are systems out there that claim they can help you get a lot of traffic to your website or affiliate link.
Truth: This is another exaggeration to get you to go with their system. What they don’t tell you is that you’ll have to pay to get thousands of views on your website… and even when you pay, you’re not guaranteed to get that many views on your website. Also, the views you may receive may be from other Internet marketers who want to promote their website or affiliate link. The only real way to increase traffic to your website is to pay for advertising.
Many of these business opportunities and systems will exaggerate or trick you with their offers to get you to pay or opt into their program. As an internet marketer, you should be aware that nothing will be easy until building a $10,000 per month business. As with any business opportunity, you will have to earn your way to success, putting in the time and effort to grow the business. By using the right tools, you will be successful.
