March Madness Betting Tips
Now a brigade of recreational sports bettors line up at the window and give, and sometimes take, line value from us “Sharp” as March Madness is in full swing. It’s obvious to me that there are a few landmines to dodge along the way, as LESS is MORE when it comes to betting on March Madness, both the NCAA and NIT tournaments going into Tuesday night. That’s a lot of parity, especially in the NIT tournament this year in college basketball. I can say without question, or without much argument, that there are 5 or 6 teams in the NIT that could be 1st round winners in the big dance, and a few possible sweet 16 teams. Always look at road records and home records in NIT games, as they are played on the teams’ courts and do not go to a neutral site until the semifinal games in New York. The home team is always in the lead, and a short line or two of value can be caught.
High seeds in the NIT are sometimes at a disadvantage, having been rejected by the NCAA Tournament Committee. Cincinnati comes to mind in that category, as well as SW Missouri State (RPI of 21) and Creighton. These teams, for example, are making it through the first round and will have a decent number at home in their first NIT game, and depending on the line, it might be worth looking at the underdog in those scenarios. Maryland is just happy to be here, and they are the #1 regional seed, and Louisville, who should also provide a stiff test in their first game, so those big boys might be WORTH a look!
NCAA Tournament trends are all over the place, I wouldn’t go into all of them, look right here, right now. Who came into the tournament limping and who came in hot and on a roll, I’m looking at Kansas for example, 15-1 their last 16 and they won the Big 12 Tourney over Texas, who won them 25 earlier this year? It’s a question that brings money. How about the shooting percentage in away games for the year? I can’t stress enough free throw percentage, many game outcomes depend on it.
I have heard so much about #5 seeds vs. #12 seeds. Over the past 5 years, #12 seeds are 10-9-1 ATS, hardly making money even against the number, but always competitive. The BEST ATS scenario in the 1st round was a #7 seed vs. a #10 seed in the past 5 years at 13-7 ATS. California vs. NC State is in this scenario this season, Marquette vs. Alabama as well, and I could see how those no. 7 win the hay in the 1st round. And last but not least, #15 seeds have covered 65% of the ATS overall over the last 5 years, and are always a huge underdog. This fact lies in the coach of the second seed resting players after the game is decided early, and backdoor covers are obvious in the right scenario. Check out the top two scorers and do your homework and find the best value in that scenario.
Overall, it should be a great tournament season, and there will be a Cinderella team or two in both the NCAA and NIT tournaments, and there will be a monster or two in the first round. Pick your teams wisely, use sound money management and don’t get caught up in all the hype or what Billy Packer or Digger Phelps say, and do your homework and look for real value and tangibles to handicap in March Madness, because that’s what the pros do, I assure you you.
