Aside from concerns for our health, an equally compelling reason to choose a vegetarian lifestyle is the moral and ethical concern about killing another animal for food. Often even those who become vegetarians purely for health reasons experience a growing responsibility to protect the animals and wildlife of this planet. The thought of killing animals and birds for “fun” or “sport” or “recreation” upsets vegetarians, many of whom are involved in conservation movements.

1. Poultry: Animal rights groups have recently focused their attention on “poultry factories,” where chickens are raised solely to produce eggs. Contaminated birds are difficult to identify because, when in cages on a conveyor belt on the way to slaughter, they are speeded by rat inspectors at 80 to 90 birds per minute. Chickens are routinely fed only limited-range antibiotics associated with a new strain of stronger organisms that have not only developed immunity to many drugs, but are also consumed by the people who eat these contaminated chickens. And, for cosmetic reasons alone, poultry farmers use a chemical dye called xanthophylls to give the meat a golden sheen to fool the consumer into believing it’s healthy.

2. Veal: an even more cruel form of torture is imposed on the veal in order to obtain a very white and particularly soft meat. They are housed in extremely narrow stalls in which they cannot move or turn; and they are fed milky porridge filled with hormones, antibiotics and a series of chemical additives. They are kept in windowless buildings that are lit only by low-wattage red bulbs that burn constantly to artificially stimulate their appetites; their heads are in the attachment hole with a continuous supply of food in front of them and they can never turn or lean back; instead, they must sleep standing up for several weeks before being sent to slaughter.

Political influence of vegetarianism

People know and are usually resigned to the excessive influence of special interest groups through the drafting of laws that are supposed to protect the health and well-being of citizens. As vegetarianism grows – both in numbers and in influence – the meat and dairy industries are putting constant pressure on politicians to oppose this positive development, going so far as to use harassment under the guise of protecting consumers from labeling prejudices. – so-called quacks in the health food industry. While their efforts may seem laudable and altruistic, they are only thinly veiled ploys to prevent or even halt progress towards vegetarianism. This inefficiency of meat production is reflected in inflated prices. Plant-based sources of protein are cheaper than the cheapest meat, and sprouted grains and seeds provide an excellent source of protein at an even greater savings.
