Hyundai Ix35 SUV
VERDICT
good:
A stylish and funky exterior PLUS a powerful yet fuel-efficient turbo diesel engine PLUS a six-speed automatic transmission PLUS an improved interior is EQUALly strong value for money.
Not so good:
The Hyundai ix35 SUV has a rather heavy design with a petrol engine that becomes noisy under strong acceleration. It also becomes firm when driving over rough terrain
THE REVIEW
Design and engineering
good:
The first to feature the Hyundai brands ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ theme that arrived in February 2010. It ranks among the coolest compact SUVs you can buy. It is enhanced by a large hexagonal grille at the front which is a typical Hyundai style of writing its presence. The rear hatch has a feature that could be called a ‘mini ducktail’ (Porsche 911 fans get this). Carverdict’s Salute.
Not so good:
Considering the size of the vehicle’s ‘footprint’, the Hyundai ix35 is no lightweight design – it weighs between 1.6 and 1.8 tonnes (compare this to a mid-sized family wagon and you’ll see that, on average, SUVs are decidedly heavier creatures). The front fascia is body-coloured on the base ‘Active’ trim and as a result (to our eyes) doesn’t look as well integrated as the gray versions on the mid and higher grades.
Interior and styling
good:
The steering wheel has a modern structure with four spokes, and the driver’s seat has a six-way power adjustment (except for the basic Active version). The seat position is relatively high, providing good frontal visibility. The rear seats offer plenty of headroom and have a folding center armrest with conveniently sized cup holders. The Hyundai ix35’s cabin storage is excellent for a family car and the rear seats fold down to increase boot space from almost 600L to over 1400L! The panoramic glass roof, standard on the Highlander model, creates a beautifully lit feeling inside.
Before October 2010 Hyundai ix35 steering wheel adjusted for tilt (up and down) but not reach (in and out). Not anymore, luckily it does both now. The 2011 ix35 range also gets additional sound deadening materials to reduce road noise levels.
Not so good:
Disappointingly, the dashboard has more plastic than one would like. Rear legroom provides enough legroom to last the journey, but not as roomy as expected. The bottom lines of the window are well above the margin; this means that children will have to keep bouncing to have a view of the road.
Performance
good:
The entry-level Active 2.0L petrol engine produces a respectable 122kW of power (and 197Nm of torque) and although it’s noisy under hard acceleration it’s by no means forgettable – it’s the only front-wheel drive variant and subsequently lighter than the AWD ix35. The mid-spec 2.4L petrol benefits from significantly more torque (227Nm); however, by far the most impressive engine is the smooth-sounding 2.0L Turbo Diesel that generates an incredible 135kW of power and 392Nm of torque.
Not so good:
With the great popularity of the 2.4L petrol engine, in the real world, however, the speed does not seem faster than the 2.0L. Yes, the sound is still weaker.
Ride and handling
good:
The Hyundai ix35 delivers a fantastic ride demonstrating its ability to be the only compact SUV on the road without fear of scraping corners. Easy to navigate through traffic. Even if the Highlander class is mounted on large 18-inch alloy wheels, it provides a comfortable ride.
Not so good:
The steering is on the light side, but considering this isn’t a sports car, it’s hardly worth mentioning. Under hard acceleration, the Turbo Diesel categories can suffer from torque steer through the steering wheel (no surprise given how much pulling power this engine has).
Impressive handling (for a high-speed SUV anyway) comes at the cost of ride quality; while it’s fine on smooth surfaces, the ride is a touch on the firm side over rougher surfaces.
From October 2010, the electronic power steering has been changed to improve steering feel and to improve ride quality, all AWD variants now have ASD suspension as standard. We’ll let you know our thoughts on the changes very soon, once we’ve spent some time driving the updated range.
Purchase and Possession
good:
Definitely the best buy with great features. The ix35 also has a quality six-speed automatic gearbox. This is a significant improvement over various competitors with a four-speed gearbox. Safety features are impressive with six airbags, ABS brakes, electronic brake distribution, traction and stability control, downhill brake control and hill assist control. Also in October 2010, with the introduction of rear parking assistance, it exceeded standards in all classes.
Not so good:
The much-talked-about twin-petrol engine offers only equal fuel economy. Although the Turbo Diesel’s economy is the best set for a compact SUV, we’re still surprised that the official combined fuel consumption figure is similar to Hyundai’s larger and heavier seven-seat diesel Santa Fe.
