Track and Field Athletics A Systematic Approach (Part 1)

Undoubtedly, it would be foolish to debate which of the starter’s commands is more important, “Runners in place,” “Runners set,” or the sound of the starting gun signaling “Go.” The “Get Set” command, however, presupposes a certain degree of preparation, readiness to start the competition. Without overusing this analogy, let’s just agree as athletes and coaches that competition readiness or long-term organization and preparation prior to the call to “Get Set” requires thoughtful planning and a systematic approach to preparing to teach, train, or compete properly and efficiently. Let’s begin by reviewing some of the basic year-round scheduling philosophies and approaches used by many successful athletic trainers to prepare athletes for their competitive seasons.

Factors to consider with thorough planning and diligent organization

Planning “holistically” may be the best way to describe an effective method for a comprehensive approach to preparation for each athletic season. This holistic philosophy takes into account the “whole person”, their particular schedules and their individual needs. Do they participate in other sports in the off-season? Maybe they compete and train in soccer or basketball, cross country, soccer or volleyball, etc. Maybe track and field is their one sport and they are able to focus all year on their special events. Do they have a job? What are their workloads and class schedules? What are their family dynamics and responsibilities? The details vary from athlete to athlete.

As coaches, it would be terrifyingly nearly impossible to know every aspect of every athlete’s life and what their demands and needs are. This ability would be like trying to gain knowledge of every athletic shoe size and model of athletic shoe worn by every athlete in your conference. Let it be said that ultimately it is up to each individual athlete to balance their needs against their desires and goals to compete in the sport. A team approach must be maintained or chaos will ensue. As coaches, we must have team rules and standards that all team members must meet and uphold, but we must also remember that our athletes are individuals with individual responsibilities and expectations outside of athletics. While we should be strictest with our team rules during the track and field season, we must get to know our athletes and be prepared to treat them as individuals with individual circumstances when necessary.

We should also try to provide an atmosphere of flexibility during the off-season. The best we can do is provide training opportunities, facilities to train in, and especially guidance and encouragement. Most of us as track and field athletes are also bound by our particular sports associations in terms of coach/athlete interactions during the off-season. This is most often the case when it comes to middle and high school athletics coaching and can vary from region to region. Another part of this holistic approach is taking the “whole season” into account. Where is our concentration? Which meetings do we focus on? Young athletes and underclassmen may just want to progress from meet to meet as the season progresses and find that the pursuit of a PR is their only goal. Realistic medal and championship expectations may still be a year or two beyond their current level of fitness or expertise. Their God-given physical talents and their attitude towards training and continuous pursuit of perfection influence their future success. In general, early season meets are used as preparation for certain big meets later, an opportunity to perfect techniques and build fitness. Championship meets are usually the focus of most athletes, especially upperclassmen and those with the experience and skills to compete against the best at their level.

The initial step toward a holistic approach to each athletic season should be a general schedule that includes as many time commitments as possible for the entire year.

We will further look at examples of this approach to planning and training for the track and field season in the next part of this article.
