The BMW 5 Series was the first model to introduce the controversial ‘flame’ design which has divided opinion. However, we’ve always been fans so we wanted to see if the latest design would hit the spot. We think BMW got it right again with a dynamic and thoroughly contemporary design that keeps the 5 bang up to date.

The new 5 Series comes with a number of EfficientDynamics technologies. There is Auto Start-Stop, an indicator of optimal gear shifting, regeneration of braking energy, active aerodynamics and tires with low rolling resistance. Additionally, a premium 8-speed automatic transmission with a longer final drive ratio to reduce engine rpm at highway speeds and help achieve great fuel economy.

In the driving stakes, BMW has retained its trademark 50:50 weight distribution, which along with the front-engine, rear-wheel drive, makes the 5 Series more agile than rivals. There’s also no reason to expect anything other than the excellent build quality we’re used to.

The latest 5 Series is evolutionary, not revolutionary, but when you’re starting so close to perfection that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The 520d ED delivers strong real-world performance while achieving fuel economy that puts many city cars to shame. With a brilliant blend of quality, style, performance and fun to drive, it remains our favorite business car.

It wasn’t that long ago that Mercedes was struggling to get into this guide, but with a new range of super high-tech engines that’s about to change. Mercedes may have been the slowest of German manufacturers to bring fuel-efficient models to market, but the results are impressive.

Gone are the days when you could tell the size of a Mercedes engine just by looking at the badge. As an example, both the E200d and E220d share the same 2.0-liter engine. They even have the same compression ratio (an impressively high 15.5:1 if you ask) so the difference in power has more to do with engine management than old school.

Both engines are more than up to the job of providing decent pace, and given that they achieve the same official fuel consumption, the choice is likely to come down to budget. It’s worth noting that you have to stick to standard 17-inch wheels to get the best efficiency with larger rims resulting in a hefty penalty (up to 10gCO2/km).

To keep the E-Class ahead of the competition, the standard automatic transmission now has 9 ratios, which goes some way to explaining the excellent official fuel consumption figures. Left to its own devices, it will shift into the highest possible gear, but you can take control of things if you want to push thanks to ‘Dynamic Select’ which offers ECO, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and a mix and match setting.

The latest E-Class takes the best aspects of the previous model, but adds state-of-the-art engines and a contemporary interior to keep it fresh. The executive Mercedes has always lagged behind the 5 Series and XF when it comes to driving, but now it’s closer than ever, meaning it’s no longer the default option. Which one you choose will depend on personal taste as they all represent executive saloons at the top of their game.

Jaguar’s renaissance has been one of the most surprising stories in recent years. In 2008, Tata bought the marque from Ford, who had never really come to grips with what to do with the Jag, and made two very important decisions; Jaguar needed investment, and Tata put a lot of money on the table, but fundamentally it didn’t need management involvement.

The XF is the latest confirmation that Tata was absolutely right. Jaguar never forgot how to make modern executive saloons, it just wasn’t allowed to. The XF takes on the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class and is even better for it.

Jaguar has invested heavily in integrating aluminum into its production models with fantastic results. The latest XF is significantly lighter than the competition and only 4% heavier than the smaller XE. Such a radical weight loss diet gets high praise from us for its fuel economy, handling and performance benefits.

In addition to advanced construction materials, the XF also boasts an all-new ‘Ingenium’ engine that finally gives Jaguar a world-class diesel engine. It also contributes to weight loss thanks to even more aluminum and its compact size. At the same time, it is capable of producing impressive power and torque figures that give the Jag a spirited performance.

There was never much wrong with the way the XF drove or looked, but it never had a really efficient engine. With this issue now firmly resolved, the combination of excellent official fuel economy, engaging dynamics, impressively low curb weight and svelte looks make for a compelling proposition.

The Lexus GS has graced the pages of the Green Car Guide for several years, but thanks to its hybrid approach to performance, Lexus never really explored the system’s fuel economy potential, preferring to benchmark fuel economy against gasoline rivals and turn up the fuse. rather than chasing diesel numbers and diluting performance. That’s how it is until now.

The 300h is very clearly designed to take on diesel rivals with fuel economy, performance and price that mimics the front German offerings. Lexus has long claimed that its hybrid petrol/electric system can do anything a diesel can do, and the repost has ‘proved it’. It seems that it pays to be careful what you wish for, as on paper the 300h is up to the task, and surprisingly, this includes the list price.

To get better fuel economy, some major mechanical changes were made. Out goes the 3.5-litre petrol engine, and in comes a 2.5-litre direct-injection unit that produces a restrained 178bhp. This is supplemented by a detuned electric motor that produces an additional 140 hp giving a very favorable total system output of 220 hp. Drive is still sent to the rear wheels via a CVT gearbox which is as always excellent for fuel economy and frustrating if you push.

So the Lexus can beat diesel rivals for sheer grunt, but what about torque? The petrol engine can’t come close, with 163lb ft at a high 4200 – 5400rpm it won’t see which way the competition is headed. But as always with hybrids, that’s only half the story. The electric motor comes to the rescue again, with a handy 221lb ft available at idle, filling the gaps admirably and keeping the GS 300h running.

The GS remains superbly finished and is probably better suited to a lower power system as it is competent to drive rather than razor sharp. The 300h is no more expensive than its diesel rivals, has competitive fuel economy and, thanks to petrol emitting less CO2 than diesel, falls into VED band B and attracts significantly lower official vehicle tax. It also has the advantage of not emitting PM and very little NOx for which diesel rivals have to resort to expensive exhaust aftertreatment. The GS is still not perfect, but the 300h is a good enough package to make you think twice before ordering a diesel rival. Looks like Lexus wasn’t kidding though, petrol hybrids can really take on diesels at their own game.
