The Proper Wardrobe For Men

Let’s face it, women are much better at this sort of thing. They seem to have an innate ability to mix and match, add on and improve; they know months in advance not only where they will be and what they will do but what they will wear. Their wardrobes are divided into ‘basic’, ‘essential’, ‘formal’, ‘evening’ etc. A typical man’s wardrobe is divided into just two parts: the stuff that still fits and the stuff that doesn’t (but we can’t quite bring ourselves to throw anything out because we’ll be hitting the gym any day). It’s stunning. Well, let’s see if we can do something about it. Here are the 12 most important components of the ‘real men’s wardrobe’.

Real wardrobe for men 1: pristine white shirt.

By white, we mean WHITE. Awesome. Keep it simple: no complicated seams, attention-grabbing buttons, oxford collars, etc. This can be worn in the evening or during the day and goes with almost everything: suits, jeans and jacket etc. Avoid wearing it as a casual shirt on its own; always wear with a suit or jacket. Once it starts to lose its supernova shine, get rid of it and get a new one.

Real wardrobe for men 2: Gray suit.

Like the shirt, keep it simple: three buttons, single-breasted. This can be worn with a tie for job interviews or other formal occasions. Lose the tie and it immediately turns into something informal, but attractive and stylish.

Real wardrobe for men 3: black suit.

You can buy this as a suit or separately. A suit can also be worn for more formal occasions, but a jacket and trousers can be mixed and matched with other items of clothing to create different looks. When worn with jeans or khakis, a black jacket makes something fun and informal look a little more thoughtful and deliberate.

The right wardrobe for men 4: black shoes and a black belt.

Again, this runs the gamut from stiff formality to relaxed and casual. Jeans, khakis, suits: there will be no problem coordinating. It’s worth investing in decent quality shoes, as we’re sure you’ll get a lot of wear out of them.

Real wardrobe for men 5: two ties.

One in solid color, one with a pattern. For a solid tie, try something dark and neutral. As for the patterned tie, avoid anything too ‘trendy’, it will be out of style before you know it; well, go for something quite classic (say a simple diagonal stripe) but not too formal.

Real wardrobe for men 6: jeans.

Look for something loose (to match the flow of your jacket) but not too loose (you won’t be wearing a hoodie and skaters!). Consider a relaxed fit. As for color, avoid traditional stone washing; look for something dark but faded and maybe a little worn (but nothing on the edge of a gaping hole). Low rise jeans are fine if you’re curvy, otherwise stay away.

Matching wardrobe for men 7: Straight front chinos.

Light, neutral color: yellow, khaki, sand. There’s relatively little that these durable and versatile pants won’t go with.

Real wardrobe for men 8: Casual sweater.

Round neck or v-neck? Well, that depends on your build. Larger-chested men, regardless of whether their breasts fall into the category of flabby ‘man chests’ or highly developed pectoral muscles, should avoid V-necks as they can create an unwanted cleavage effect. Colors should be dark (think black, navy, navy) and the fit should be neat without being too tight. Baggy sweaters should be avoided.

Real wardrobe for men 9: Polo shirts.

A few if this, if your budget can accommodate. Solid colors only (no stripes please, unless you want to look like a creepy, oversized schoolboy – this is a real wardrobe for men, remember?). Whatever colors you want, but try to have at least one in black or navy blue.

Appropriate wardrobe for men 10: Casual shoes.

The popular sneaker/shoe hybrid offers a great way to ‘deformalise’ an outfit, but keep the color brown (and its variations) and avoid too many patterns. A pair of rugged brown oxfords works just as well.

Matching wardrobe for men 11: Sandals.

A very basic thong, preferably brown leather. Obviously, no socks.

Real wardrobe for men 12: shorts.

Longer short, but keep it above the knee. Color-wise, look for khaki or olive (anything light and neutral, really). Combat style shorts are fine, but avoid anything too bulky. Worn with sandals and a polo shirt, this will create a summer look that’s casual but noticeable.

Now that you have the right wardrobe for men, you should never get caught again. You’ll also find that by working from this base, you’ll be able to add items of clothing not just because you like them on their own, but because you’ll be able to see how they’ll work with other elements in your wardrobe.

Happy shopping.
