4 Key Skills for Coaching Volleyball

Coaching volleyball is primarily a mental exercise. However, there are a few physical skills that are quite handy to have. In fact, if you’re looking to be an assistant or apprentice coach, these are the virtual skills you need to have.

Tossing

A lot of volleyball drills and drills start with a throw. If you can’t throw the ball accurately then you will struggle to achieve the kind of consistency that your players need to work on certain skills. If in doubt, look at what happens when your players make the throw. Think about things like balls being sent to the pitcher to warm up. You can throw underhand or overhand (like a setup move). Either is fine as long as you can consistently put the ball where you want it.

Under the arm

It may seem like a pretty simple thing to do, but consistency and accuracy with the ball underhand takes some practice. Anyone can throw a high loopy ball over the net and into the middle of the court. However, what the coach needs to be able to do is to be able to hit balls in all parts of the field and at different speeds.

Topspin Hitting

Coaching defense, whether as a team or individually, requires precise movement of the attacked ball. It can be from the ground on the same side of the field or over the net via a dropped ball, or it can be over the net from the top of a box or chair. It can be a strictly defensive drill, or it can be part of a transition drill (dig – transition – attack, for example). Regardless, you have to put the ball where you want it – flat, high/low, to one side or the other, in front – at a pace that suits the level of the player/players in question.

Serving

While most of the time it makes sense to have the players initiate the balls in the drill with the serving included, sometimes it is necessary for the coach to take it upon himself. For this to be effective, the ball has to go where you want it to go more often than not. Obviously, a float serve won’t always end up exactly where you aimed it, but it should be pretty close. You also need to be able to vary the speed of your serve, and it helps to have enough repertoire at your disposal to return any type of serve your opposition may throw at your team. This doesn’t mean that you should be able to pull off a powerful jump shot yourself, but you should be able to figure out a way to simulate something close (like hitting balls out of the midcourt box).

If you are a volleyball coach without these four skills, you will be very limited in what you can do with your team. If you are the head coach, you can work around any limitations you have by bringing in an assistant coach to make up for the shortfall. However, if you want to be an assistant coach, you are at a disadvantage because you lack these skills when it comes to finding work.
