A Binocular View of the New Yankee Stadium

I’m the one who always carries binoculars with me in case I miss something. By missing something I mean not seeing something up close and personal; or you don’t see a larger and enhanced version of a particular shot or frame. Obviously for birds, binoculars work. One can only get so close to a robin’s nest or a sparrow’s birdhouse without being disruptive or intrusive. Binoculars allow you to stay a nice distance away and still check out the birds and see a lot. A mother robin feeding and protecting the family can be clearly seen from a distance of 100 feet or more without feeling like you are hovering near the ‘invasion of privacy’ line.

Bringing binoculars to a ball game, however, is not the same as using binoculars to track birds. As a true baseball AND NY Yankees fan, I often get a little nervous about whether or not to bring binoculars to the ballpark. If I don’t bring them, I’ll still see the game just fine. Because I’m obsessive about not wanting to miss a single match, I can feel it watching the action through binoculars sometimes takes away from the pure enjoyment of watching baseball. On Friday, the day before my friend and I were supposed to attend the Yankees-Phillies game, I realized that I had lent my friend my Leupold 8X30 Yosemite binoculars. The Leupold 8X30s are my personal favorite for watching baseball. No problem, I had the Carson YK 10X42 ready (I use them mostly for birds). They’re not that light, and I wasn’t sure how the extra weight would work for a three-hour game. And much to my surprise, I found that weight was not a factor at all. And with the added magnification, close-ups were more intimate. Sitting in section 215, between third base and left foul field, they certainly came in handy.

As far as taking away from the pure enjoyment, we picked our spots and it really worked out perfectly. I mean, what baseball fan is going to watch an entire game through binoculars anyway? That’s pretty funny. We got to our seats about 45 minutes before the first pitch and got to see the players up close during warm ups, stretches, etc. It was also great to see the players talking to each other, sometimes smiling and laughing. We saw Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon having quite a laugh after a short conversation that took place at 2nd base; with Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins. We immediately wanted to find out what these two stars (from opposing teams) were talking about. That’s what makes watching a game live so much fun. Experiencing a personal connection between two regular guys who happen to make a lot of money playing baseball… makes fans even bigger fans. With my Carson YK 10X42, the experience was definitely better than it would have been if we hadn’t brought them. And if I hadn’t borrowed my Leupolds, I never would have learned that full size 10×42 binoculars actually work very well for watching a baseball game.

As for the game itself, we were able to do some close-ups at key moments in the game when we felt so inclined. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Yanks were down 4-2. Since the wind had picked up a bit, we were thinking of leaving earlier for dinner. Up until then, the Yankees had looked pretty scary at the plate. Obviously we didn’t know at this point that we were about to witness the best passing win of the season; in a season that already had several. Fortunately, we stayed. With one out in the bottom of the ninth and Damon on first, I watched Alex Rodriguez go through my 10X42 for every Phillies pitcher, and last year’s best closer in both leagues, Brad Lidge. In hindsight, I never would have known how great the bat was without binoculars. Down 3-2, A-Rod connected and then posed — just like he always does when he knows he just hit one out of the park. We watched the ball drop into right field. Wow! Even game! Then I got caught up in the frenzy of the Bronx crowd and put down my binoculars. Two batters later, Melky Cabrera got his third game-winning hit of the year, and the Yankees somehow won another game they had no business in. And we were there to see it… and we had the best vantage point in the stadium!
