Sexual Orientation In Athletics – Should We Judge?

In today’s society, especially in the world of sports, sexual orientation has become an extremely popular but sensitive topic; so delicate that admitting one’s sexual orientation could be detrimental to one’s career, relationships, and even one’s life. However, some professionals are still active in their field. I once read an article that gave numerous examples of people who lost their careers as a result of “coming out”, and others who have also come out since then, but are still very popular in their chosen field.

To emphasize, author Pat Griffin, from the book “Chalk Talk: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Female Athletes Come Out to Coaches”, made a comparative difference between sexual orientation then and now. In doing so, he suggested that society has become more tolerant of homosexuality, especially in the workplace. Back then, there were few laws protecting people of that orientation; plus, established new guidelines and protocols to protect gays and lesbians from gay/lesbian hate crimes. Now, more than ever, there is a shift in the cultural acceptance of homosexuals, and the author attributes this to a low tolerance for discrimination against homosexuals, lesbians and bisexuals.

Many careers have ended because of bad remarks or anti-gay slurs. Baseball celebrity John Rocker’s career came to a screeching halt after his gay comment. As a result, many have certainly become more aware of the consequences.

Griffin, who believes that many gays and lesbians suffer from a lack of friends and in many cases from having no positive role models in their lives, concluded that the purpose of this article is to educate people in the athletic arena about the importance of sexual freedom. , the rights associated with it and the individuals that those rights protect. Additionally, this article aims to further educate athletes, coaches and leaders on the importance of maintaining unity within their clubs and/or organization through knowledge, experience and understanding. According to Griffin, there are numerous support programs for homosexuals. Websites like outsports.com, which provides information about GLBT, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which has passed non-discriminatory laws addressing sexual orientation, Griffin said.

Not only has the author, Pat Griffin, provided background information on the subject, he has also introduced useful tips and advice to heterosexuals on how to approach people of a different sexual orientation that is opposite to their own. Today, the world is forever changing in its approach to sexuality as a whole. Professional athletes or coaches such as Mike Messina, Johnny Damon, Ken Griffey, Jr. and Joe Valentine express their openness to having a gay teammate, Griffin said. In addition to keeping an open mind, other athletes have reflected in a similar way by guesting on the hit television show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.”

The world of athletics has seen many changes. Consequently, many professional athletes now find comfort in expressing their sexual beliefs. Since the early 90s, many homosexuals have “come out” and received support from various organizations. Among them are basketball superstar, Sheryl Swoopes, Esera Tuoalo, professional soccer player; Rosie Jones and Patty Sheehan Professional Golf; Amelie Mauresmo, professional tennis, Rudy Galindo and Brian Orser, professional figure skating; Billy Bean, professional baseball; Mark Tewksbury, Olympic swimming, and Michele Van Gorp, and Sue Wicks, said Griffin, 2007.

I found the article quite interesting and informative. Until now, I was unaware of the struggles experienced by people of different sexual orientations. Although I am not sure what the future holds, I believe the world is taking a positive step towards creating awareness for the unaware and understanding for the misunderstood. Personally, I think everyone is entitled to their own sexual beliefs and/or practices; as the Bible says,…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12). However, this can present difficulties and widen the gap in areas where people may not be as ready to accept others based on their sexual orientation.

To close this gap, we must, as a society, pray for each other. The Bible says: pray for one another, that you may be healed… the effective fervent prayer of the righteous avails much, (James 5:16). I say this because as we look through our mirrors of guilt, promiscuity, name-calling, accusations and labeling – we end up balking at the opportunity to tell someone about Jesus, his tender mercy and how he can save anyone whose desires change. If we spend our time in judgment, what will be our affliction in that judgment day? Remember this, hatred is born of itself, but love covers a multitude of sins. Mind you, this is not advocating the practices we so often indulge in; however, it is to inform us that we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Therefore, no one is more righteous than another; unless we turn from our ways of transgression and ask the Lord Jesus for his help and guidance, our life’s worth may be in vain.

Here are two tips that will change your life:

  • In our holiest days, we are but filthy rags in God’s eyes.
  • Our worst day in Christ, we are at our best!
  • If you have come across this article, you can rest assured that you are blessed, and I pray that God himself will touch your heart to be more like Jesus.

Today there are laws that protect such citizens from abuse and crimes against homosexuals. In addition, there are laws that support the acceptance of homosexual marriages, while ensuring the acquisition of the same rights and freedoms as heterosexuals. And finally, the challenge is not only for society to accept people as they are, but to first remember that everyone can change, everything is possible, and that they are people too.
