What quality of fuel (food) are you feeding it? Are you giving it enough water? Do you skip boring routines like annual physicals because you have other things you want to do? Are you continuing to do what you’ve always done (too many calories and no exercise) and expecting different results? Would you like your doctor to prescribe some “magic” pill for you to take when you’re sick – as long as your routine doesn’t need to change? Are you avoiding any healthy new habits because the old ones are so comfortable?
We cannot trade our old bodies for new ones – that’s not how life works. As Mickey Mantel once said: “I’d take better care of myself if I knew I’d live this long.”

Oh sure, the same basic principles are necessary – more fruits and veggies, whole grain products, legumes, nuts, lean protein, less sugar and fat, portion control, exercise, fitness and water instead soft drinks. Unfortunately, not enough attention is paid to the uniqueness of each individual. We start with different bodies, jobs, family situations, personal and family histories, likes and dislikes. Thankfully, there’s more than one way to get the desired result.
The biggest challenge is deciding how important we think a healthy lifestyle is and what we are willing to do to make it happen. Integrity is the first step. Whether we like or dislike what we see in the mirror, it is our own past choices that have brought us this far. No one is to blame for forcing us to eat junk food or strapping us to a chair in front of the TV. No one else can make choices every day that make our future healthier!
Start by deciding on the look and feel you want. All the things that make life rich and enjoyable—vitality, vitality, optimism, strength, freedom from disease—deserve to be prioritized. It may seem trivial, but having deep, meaningful reasons is critical to your success.
You are the only one who can make lasting changes in your life. Recognize from the start that this will take time. After all, no one goes from star athlete to wimpy couch potato in a month or two — and the reverse doesn’t happen sooner.
A sudden, complete overhaul of everything in your life is not going to work! More can be accomplished by making small changes—one small step at a time. Which makes more sense – lose 15 pounds in a month, but gain it back by the end of the year? Or, to avoid feeling like some kind of martyr, lose 4 to 6 pounds a month and keep it off for the rest of your life? Remember, too, that there’s more than one way to exercise and find what you really, really like and enjoy doing.
Success is the combined effort of mind, body and emotions. You may find that keeping a personal journal to report your before and after stories is a great motivation to stay on track. Start your book with photos and general records of weight, measurements, health profile and physical fitness. It feels good to add new data as you progress. Statistics are necessary, but perhaps more important is the diary section, recording how you feel about the changing results.
What you experience along the way becomes as interesting as where you think you’re going. Document your joy in discovering new flexibility while stretching, the joy of finding food that tastes good for you, the freedom to live without those pesky sorenesses, and of course, the newfound energy you felt throughout that day. . Look back every now and then to savor the progress you’ve made step by step!
We can’t change our bodies for shiny new models, but we can feel and look younger than our calendars show. It’s important to start caring for our most precious machine – our own body. Picasso said: “Put off until tomorrow what you would rather die than finish.”
