David Bromstad is the star of HGTV’s hit show “Color Splash.” He has become very popular due to his amazing eye for design, custom art and color style. While his shows have attracted legions of interior design lovers, his svelte and toned physique has also been the talk of the town. His muscular mass is medium, but his muscles have excellent tone. He has great definition because he’s able to keep his body fat low to reveal his ripped body. It doesn’t take a lot of time in the gym to gain the same amount of muscle as David. If you want a lean body like his, ditch the bodybuilder mentality.

Getting Thin Is Harder Than Getting Big

What I call a “bodybuilder mentality” is more based on how they train and eat. Most of the bodybuilders or fitness enthusiasts you come across are burly, well-built guys with very little tone or articulation. They may all be able to bench press 500 pounds or have thighs the size of tree trunks, but they never seem to be able to reduce their body fat enough to show muscle. This happens because going big requires very little discipline. Remember, these guys usually get a lot of attention from the other guys at the gym for their amazing powerlifting abilities and weird physiques, but the ladies ignore them anytime. I hear it all the time that women prefer a thinner body, like David Bromstad, Taylor Lautner or Ryan Reynolds. What do these three celebrities have in common? Decent muscle mass, but very low body fat percentage!

Avoid getting too big, it will ruin your look

Bodybuilders always seem to overwork out in the weight room. Getting too big to wear regular clothes or jeans is a nightmare. Big guys look awkward when they try to dress up or even wear regular jeans. Women love fashion, and they love it even more when men combine fashion with a lean, toned body. I’m not trying to bash big guys or bodybuilders, I’m just trying to help.

Your Own Lean Crash Course

Like I said before, if you’ve been lifting weights, then you probably have enough muscle mass. So instead, we’ll focus on losing that excess body fat so we can show off your hard-earned muscles. I would start by saying skip straight leg workouts. Chances are you have more muscle mass in your legs and butt than you already need. Having big legs and a big butt won’t make you look GQ. My suggestion is to only spend about 15-20 minutes of strength training followed by 45-60 minutes of cardio. When I say “cardio,” I don’t mean lounging around on the elliptical and reading magazines. I’m talking about high intensity interval training.

Your Eating Habits Need a Makeover

As far as diet goes, this is where many people drop the ball. You don’t need to eat 6-8 meals a day like I believe you’ve been told. People who eat 6-8 meals a day are almost always taking in more calories than they burn, so they never get the definition they want. You also don’t need a lot of protein to maintain a lean body. Try to eat 2-3 normal-sized meals. If you really need to lose fat fast, intermittent fasting is the way to go. Intermittent fasting can create a huge calorie deficit without losing muscle.

Note: If you don’t have access to a gym, you can still get in shape with workouts that include only bodyweight exercises, such as: pushups, pullups, hanging leg raises, etc. Gyms are a definite trend in Hollywood, and for very good reasons. Remember, high-intensity cardio and keeping calories low will burn body fat and keep you looking lean, fit and lean like David Bromstad in “Color Splash.”
