No Waves – No Surfing Today – What Are Your Alternatives?
If you’re a water lover, a day without waves to surf opens up whole new horizons for water activities. Sometimes it’s a blessing, kind of like a reprieve. Are you tired of surfing every day? Don’t answer that question! If there are no waves to surf, consider all possibilities available.
Here are some types of surfboards that are great for a no-surf day:
· Paddle board
· Paddle board
· Wave pool surfboard
You have some really good options. You can take your SUP out to the ocean or the nearest body of water and go on a leisure cruise or exercise. It seems more and more surfers are adding SUP to their quiver. Many families are adding a SUP or two or even more so that everyone in the family can get in the water. If they don’t have a SUP, they go to the local surf shop or watersports rental shop and rent it for a day for a very low price.
As I mentioned in a previous article, stand up paddling has become a very popular activity for individuals and families. It’s become a great way to entertain while getting a good workout, cruising the waterways on your own, joining a local friend group or SUP club, and turning your SUP experience into a social one. Consider adding a SUP to your surfboard bag.
If you are younger, or an energetic person, you can go skateboarding. A wakeboard is a small surfboard that you stand on and slide or glide through very shallow water. You can skim in 1/8 inch or less of water. To wakeboard, you run as fast as you can with your wakeboard, build speed and momentum, place your wakeboard on shallow water or a wet surface, jump on it and wakeboard and glide for great distances. As your skill level increases, you can spin, turn, jump, and ride forward and backward. Be very careful while learning because you could lose control and land on your butt on the hard sand.
You can waterski lakes, rivers and shorelines on almost any body of water, even on wet lawn, as long as there are no rocks or debris to get in your way. Some kids riding skateboards on a grassy knoll in a park or on a golf course. You can also tow riders on skateboards behind your boat, or even car tow in an aqueduct. Skateboarding is a fun activity and has turned into a small professional sport with more and more companies getting into it. Most wakeboards are rigid boards made of fiberglass or wood, but there is also a soft board on the market called the “ONE” designed by Tom Morey, the inventor of the Morey Boogie Board.
Wakeboards are another possibility, but you’ll need a boat to tow you. You can ride behind a boogie board like a wakeboard, or on the stern of a boat like a surfer, letting go of the rope. As a special note, Hobie Alter took a motorboat from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island, which is approximately 26 miles long and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. You can also buy wakeboards designed for waterskiing, or you can use a surfboard, SUP, or wakeboard. Most surfers who practice the sport use long or short boards.
Paddle boarding is another great way to spend time on the water. Paddle boards have been around for a long time, popularized in Hawaii by Tom Blake in the early 1900’s. The paddle board is paddled in a prone position or on your knees. However, you can sit on a boogie board for a leisurely paddle, look at the foliage underwater, go fishing, or just cruise around and get some fresh air and a view. You can also paddle a surfboard to keep yourself paddled. There was a small group of people participating in the paddle board race. The most famous race is the Molokai to Diamond Head race held annually in Hawaii. It’s a rough high seas race where past rowers have lost their lives.
Man-made wave surfing is another popular spot. There are wave parks that simulate waves, some as high as 4 to 6 feet. There are also standing wave machines, where water is pushed against walls by force to simulate waves. Operators of standing wave machines use and provide special small surfboards. There are very few wave pools, wave parks and standing wave machines. Some are very good, but most are mediocre at best.
If you really need a break from surfing and don’t want to ride any of the boards mentioned above, forget about the sofa and TV. Go to the gym and do some cardio, abs, and lift weights. You get a great workout, get ready for your next surf ride, and walk out of the gym feeling great because you’ve accomplished something for yourself. In future articles, I will discuss body conditioning procedures that all surfers should follow. I will also tell you about healthy eating, which is an important part of your physical fitness and will also help you improve your surfing skills.
So my friends, don’t let a day without surfing get you down. Get the most out of your quiver by having the right type of surfboard in your quiver, which will diversify your experience on the water. It’s part of life learning how to surf. Enjoy the water, surf or not! awesome!
